Clonmel Racecourse (Powerstown Park)

Powerstown Park, on the edge of Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, is an undulating right-handed track racing all year round, best known for its jump racing in autumn and winter.

About the course

Clonmel Racecourse, also known as Powerstown Park, sits in the Powerstown area on the Clonmel bypass, a short distance from the centre of the town. The racecourse gives 1856 as its date of establishment.

It is an undulating, right-handed oval with a noted stiff uphill run to the winning line. Because the course slopes up from the stands, the view of the racing from the enclosure is good, which the racecourse and Horse Racing Ireland both point out.

Clonmel is one of three racecourses in County Tipperary and the only one of the three that races all year round. It holds around 12 meetings a year under both flat and jump rules. Flat racing takes place in the spring and summer, but the course is best known for competitive jump racing in the autumn and winter months.

Big meetings and races

The big day is the Clonmel Oil Chase, a Grade 2 steeplechase run every November. Its roll of honour includes Doran's Pride, War Of Attrition, Sizing Europe and Imperial Call, all familiar names to jumps fans.

Horse Racing Ireland notes that Clonmel holds three graded races through the year. Alongside the Oil Chase, the November programme has featured the T. A. Morris Memorial Mares Chase, and a graded novice hurdle has been run in February. Sponsors and race titles change, so check the racecard for the current names.

The course also puts on social events through the summer, including barbecue hospitality packages, which suit groups looking for a relaxed evening out. New to racing? Our first day at the races guide walks you through the day.

Getting there

  • By road: Powerstown Park is on the Clonmel bypass, approximately two miles from the town centre by road.
  • By rail: Clonmel train station, just off the Fethard roundabout, is less than half a mile from the racecourse, which makes Clonmel one of the easier courses to reach by train.
  • By bus: the Clonmel bus station is at the same spot off the Fethard roundabout, less than half a mile from the course.

Facilities and tips for visitors

The racecourse describes its parking as accessible and ample.

  • Stands: the Grand Stand holds around 3,500 people, and the Club Stand around 1,000, with good views of the track.
  • Bars: the T.A. Morris Bar sits under the main Grand Stand, the glass-fronted Club Stand Bar looks out over the track, and the Supporters Club Bar has a balcony overlooking the winning post.
  • Food: a restaurant under the Club Stand serves hot dinners, sandwiches and pastries, and a snack bar beside the parade ring offers fast food, soup and sandwiches.
  • Groups: a private room in the lower Grand Stand seats about 150, and a Sponsors Room with a balcony seats about 30.
  • Accessibility: the racecourse publishes an accessibility options page on its website.

Nearby places to stay

Clonmel itself is the obvious base, with the course a short trip from the town centre and the train and bus stations close by. If you are touring, the other Tipperary courses at Thurles and Tipperary are within reach, and the coast at Tramore is not far to the south east.
