About the course
Racing has been held at Proudstown, on the outskirts of Navan, for almost 100 years. The course is owned by Horse Racing Ireland and has been modernised over time, with restaurants, bars, a café and a children's area.
Navan is a left-handed oval of one mile and four furlongs with wide, sweeping bends and a testing uphill finish over roughly the last two furlongs. There is also a straight sprint course of nearly six furlongs. It is described as a big galloping track, and it tends to attract good horses, so regular racegoers often get an early look at runners heading for the major festivals.
The course stages both Flat and jumps racing, but it is best known for National Hunt racing and is at its busiest in the autumn, winter and spring.
Big meetings and races
- Navan Racing Festival: a two-day jumps weekend each November, featuring the Troytown Chase, the Fortria Chase and the Lismullen Hurdle, with live music and entertainment off the track.
- Other jumps races: the Boyne Hurdle in February and the Monksfield Novice Hurdle are among the course's other big National Hunt races.
- On the Flat: the feature races are the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes and the Listed Salsabil Stakes.
- Family Raceday: held in the middle of July, with free entry for children and entertainment such as face painting, bubble fun, magic shows and interactive racing activities.
Getting there
- By road: Navan is on the N3 north-west of Dublin, and the course is on the R162 Proudstown Road, about 5 km from the town centre. From Dublin, take the M3 to Junction 8 (Navan South), follow the R147 into town, turn right up Flower Hill where it is signposted for the racecourse, then take the second exit at the roundabout onto the R162. The course is about 4 km along on the left. From the north, leave the M1 at Junction 12 and go through Slane on the N51 before joining the R162.
- By bus: Bus Éireann runs an hourly service from Busáras in Dublin to Navan town centre. There is normally no bus from the town to the course, so take a taxi from Navan.
- By rail: The closest railway station is Drogheda, about 24 km east of Navan. From there, take a bus to Navan and a taxi on to the course.
- Festival shuttles: During the Navan Racing Festival, free shuttle buses run between Navan town and the course.
Car parking at the course is free.
Facilities and tips for visitors
The Troytown Bar sits beneath the grandstand, a short walk from the parade ring, with screens, Tote betting and live music after every weekend meeting. Next door, the Kilberry Restaurant is a self-service restaurant open to all racegoers. The Racecourse Café sits beside the on-course betting shop, and the Big Zeb Kids Room next to the café has interactive games for younger visitors.
There is free wifi, and an accessible viewing area beside the parade ring. The course recommends smart casual dress and suggests thinking about the weather and comfortable shoes.

Nearby places to stay
Navan town has several options for different budgets and is the natural base, a short taxi ride from the course. Drogheda, with its rail link, is another option, and Dublin is close enough for a day trip by car or bus.
